"Flying to Japan, on the Eskimo Airline"
I flew from San Francisco to Tokyo Narita on Alaska Airlines. I was surprised to learn that they operate 737-700 on this route. I assumed we would fly on a larger (widebody) plane. The flight was pretty nice actually. Since they need to load extra fuel for this flight, they have special fuel tanks inside part of the plane which is usually the passenger cabin. So this means there are fewer seats, and in fact there is only a row of 3 on one side of the plane. The other side has fuel. It smells a bit like gasoline and they make a bunch of announcements before the plane takes off, that you can't light matches during the trip. Buy on board snack boxes were a surprise. I thought they would offer a meal on an 11 hour flight.
"Excellent Service"
First time on Alaska Airlines and I really enjoyed the experience, which was a good thing as it was a 6 hour flight in a 737-800. The down side was the First Class seat was very basic with no foot rest or built in IFE. The upside was the warm and friendly service, the decent food, the truly excellent and efficient boarding (best i have ever experienced) and on time departure. The crew on the return leg was particularly jovial which made a long and very turbulent flight a lot of fun. They also managed to get the plane away early! I love the 20 minute guarantee for bags on arrival. And the kooky prayer cards you get with your meal left us wondering what we were praying for but I'll let you consider the answer to that!

@handsometraveler: many thanks for your review.
Since Alaska Airlines does not fly to Japan on schedule service or direct from San Francisco, could you clarify the context of your trip: Was it a charter flight? was your flight operated by a partner airline (codeshare flight)?
Thank you.
Oh yes, maybe it was operated by a partner airline. I thought that there was an eskimo on the tail, but maybe i saw that when I was looking out of the window. I think the flight was either operated by Cathay Japan airlines, or Northwest Oriental. I will check my boarding stub.
