(SYD) Kingsford Smith Airport, Sydney
"'Greed is Good' ...Extortion is Even Better According to Macquarie Airports that is!"
Sydney airport facilities have been given a welcome transformation and there are now some actual decent eatting and drinking facilities for passengers and their friends/family to spend time in before departure. The biggest gripe and complaints still exist with both parking fees and the difficulties that Sydney Airports(Macquarie Bank owned that is)place on people who are not allowed to be picked up by family/friends in their own car!!I was shadowed, chased and harrassed by some drongo when I waited patiently for my wife to pick me up last weekend and told that we would be photographed and fined 180$ if she stopped to pick me up!!!That's how low a bank will stoop to make you either catch a taxi (and charge 3.50$ extra)or make your pickup spend 12$ minimum in their carpark to boost their profit margin folks!
"SYD - The best international airport in Sydney"
As a Sydney resident and frequent flyer, I often find myself here. SYD international has just completed a major upgrade to the shopping facilities and is easily in line with most serious airports around the world. Most major brands are represented including (at time of writing) the only retail Victoria's Secret outlet.
Customs and immigration is usually quite efficient and 4/5 times I am through the whole process in less than 30 minutes. But I have also witnessed serious congestion which results in delayed flights, missed connections and upset travellers.
One of our best assets is the yellow jacket volunteers who assist people find their way. Initiated for the 2000 Olympics, it was such a hit with travellers it has remained ever since. If you find yourself in a bit of bother, don't hesitate to ask one for help, but please remember they are volunteers and don't unload all your troubles on them.
Free Internet/email portals are scattered throughout the check-in and departure areas and are sponsored by Optus. These have saved me more than once. Please be considerate and don't 'hog' a terminal.
All this said, the renovations are still continuing at time of writing (Sept '10) so Sydneysiders are still waiting to see the full result.
Best way to get in and out of Sydney Airport: Train. Avoid coming by private car, parking is expensive.
Good things: Close to city centre, close to domestic terminal although a short transfer is required ($5 by train). Website is comprehensive and very useful (www.sydneyairport.com.au)
Needs improving: Private car access, although a new 15 minute free parking option is now available.
