HKG used to pride itself on being the world's best airport. However, if they want to regain this title, they need to sack whoever is in charge of immigration there. Queues for inwards and outwards immigration snake back for ages. In winter time, people cough and sneeze on each other in the queues - creating the potential for more SARS outbreaks. Complaining about the situation gets nowhere - none of the staff wants to know about it.
The silly thing is that the Hong Kong economy misses out on money that people waiting in the immigration queues could be spending in Hong Kong - especially when they are on short stayovers. All it would take to fix this problem is to ensure that the immigration staff already on duty actually spend their time manning the available immigration checkpoints.
