"Small but adequate"

To sum up Aberdeen's Dyce airport in one word, I would call it 'adequate'. The airport is surprisingly small, the facilities basic and the service acceptable.

Arriving from London Heathrow, I found the arrivals process to be reasonably efficient. Passengers disembarked the small Embraer aircraft within 2-3 of the engines being shut down and were pointed towards the terminal. Getting to the arrivals hall took no time at all and finding my way to baggage reclaim was not a problem - since there is only one reclaim belt for domestic arrivals! The arrivals hall is compact but functional. Just 10 steps or so from the reclaim area are the car rental counters, with the car parks just a short walk away.

Departing from Aberdeen was reasonably straightforward. Given the airport's size, check-in is not possible until two hours before as the airlines apparently have nowhere to store hold baggage. With few seating areas available, those arriving earlier than necessary for flights have to stand or walk around to pass the time. There are 20 check-in desks in all, with some airlines (British Airways included) having self check-in counters.

Getting to departures takes a little time. With only one desk available for checking of identification and boarding passes, busier times of the day can mean that some waiting is required. Similarly, the airport's security area is small and can take some time to clear. On my trip, it took around 20 minutes.

Only a few shops are available in the departures area, and again, there is not a great deal in the way of seating available.
